Careers in the environment sector are within reach to local job seekers. There is a variety of attractive positions in the environmental sector and the sector is fulfilling a big role in providing lifelong careers for Seychellois. This was the message that Nature Seychelles passed on to visitors to its stall at the Ministry for Labour and Human Resource Development Job Fair held on Friday 27 April.

Nature Seychelles promotes the blue economy in the far east

"Seychelles, small country, big nation" and "Blue is the new Gold" are the powerful messages that form part of Seychelles pavilion at Expo 2012 in the city of Yeosu in South Korea. The messages are contained in a banner designed by Nature Seychelles as part of the Expo, where the theme is "The Living Ocean and Coast." The banner explains our dependency as a nation on the sea and outlines the organisation’s contribution towards the country’s marine-based economy: the management of Cousin Island Special Reserve which is also a Marine Protected Area; sustainable tourism; fisheries co-management; climate change; ecosystems restoration and species conservation.

The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) has agreed to measures that, if appropriately implemented by tuna longline fishing vessels, will result in significant reductions in albatross mortality.

Almost everybody I met over the last couple of weeks had opinions about the storm surge that battered some of our islands. The dredging of sand off Beau Vallon of course has been debated even in the media. In a book published by the World Bank, Sida and the Seychelles Government back in 1995 I had predicted that storm surges and coastal development would collide leading to disasters.

Nature Seychelles wins ‘Educating Africa’ Award

Nature Seychelles was the organisation with the most entrepreneurial approach to education in Seychelles in 2011 winning the Educating Africa Pan-African Awards for Entrepreneurship in Education for 2011. "Nature Seychelles has done exceptionally well to be named country winner in the competition. This means that it caught the judges’ attention despite this being the most competitive award to date," organisers said.

Greening livelihoods project launched, agreement with partners signed

On Friday 9 March 2012, Nature Seychelles launched the Greening Livelihoods project which aims at using nature to benefit vulnerable groups in Seychelles. On the occasion of the launch, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Drug and Alcohol Council (DAC) and the Centre Mont Royal was signed.

Zwazo magazine shows how science supports conservation

Late last year, we were excited to report that an incredible milestone had been achieved in species conservation in Seychelles. The Seychelles warbler, once on the verge of extinction has made an astonishing recovery and could well be on its way to being taken off the Red List of Threatened Species. The success has been achieved largely through a translocation program that has increased the warbler numbers. Began in 1988, it resulted in the establishment of four new populations, from the original in Cousin Island.

EU supports Nature Seychelles' Greening Livelihoods Project

The European Union has recently provided a grant to Nature Seychelles in support of a project to be carried out in the Seychelles. The project will use the environment to provide new socio-economic opportunities for at risk groups. Nature Seychelles is set to launch the project, Greening Livelihoods: Using the environment to provide new socio-economic options for vulnerable groups in Seychelles in the coming weeks.
