Costa Rica proves an entire country can generate electricity from renewable sources

In 1983 when I visited Costa Rica to work in its La Selva reserve, the country was already famous as a leader in conservation. Today, Costa Rica is building a genuine green and blue economy. Since January this year the country produced 100 percent of its electricity from renewables. The country uses hydroelectric power plants, solar, biomass, and geothermal. Heavy rains this year have given a huge boost to hydroelectric plants.

The findings of screening done on various islands in the Seychelles between May 2010 and March 2013 to test amphibians for Bd have just been published in the Herpetological Review. Bd (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) is a fungus that causes illness in the species, threatening amphibian populations worldwide with 71 countries and nearly 700 species reportedly affected.

Nature Seychelles’ Reserve Coordinator, Eric Blais recently returned from a three-day training on coral reef monitoring organised by the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC). The training was held in Albion Fisheries Research Centre in Mauritius from 24th to the 26th of February.
