The Roche Caiman Sanctuary provides an exciting focus for national conservation education and research facilities that will enable the public and others to explore and understand better the dynamics of a freshwater ecosystem. We were therefore delighted when the US Embassy agreed to provide project funds to support it. We are to receive funding of $6,100 as a contribution towards upgrading the site.

Nature Seychelles is managing the Sanctuary at Roche Caiman. The Sanctuary is the only urban wetland reserve in Seychelles. In 2002, the Government of Seychelles handed over the management of the sanctuary to Nature Seychelles and the Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles.  Unfortunately, improper use and poor management in the past means there is a long uphill struggle to restore this wetland from a wasteland to its former state when it had attracted up to 65 species of birds.
